Identify and Track Variable
Expenses
We all have fixed expenses and variable expenses. Fixed expenses are those which are due regularly and typically don’t change very much - like rent, mortgage payments, car payments, cable, internet, etc. Variable expenses are those that you have control over, like spending on groceries, eating out, and entertainment. Many people also have variable income, like bonuses, tips, commissions, overtime, etc. The Simple Spending Plan is a spreadsheet that allows you to easily enter all of your fixed and variable income and expenses. The spreadsheet then calculates everything for you and shows you a summary of your monthly budget. There you will see if you are typically spending more or less than you are bringing in. You can go back and forth making adjustments until you are happy with your own personal spending plan. There are also other tabs which allow you to record and track your income and expenses weekly and monthly. It then totals these entries for you so that you can compare your plan to your actual spending from month to month, and over the entire year. In this way, it is not only a tool to help you set a spending plan, but it also helps you stick to that plan!
